Defining and describing airways obstruction in children.

چکیده
The two most common diseases with airway obstruction from pre-school age are asthma and cystic fibrosis (CF). Airway diseases in infancy will not be discussed. For reasons of simplicity, asthma is defined as the complex coexistance of one or more of the symptoms wheeze, breathlessness, cough, mucus hypersecretion, which are either chronically or intermittently present and which are generally triggered by viral infections, allergens, pollutants (cigarette smoke), exercise, sudden changes in temperature of the inspired air etc.

Correlation Between Upper Airways Obstructive Indexes in Adenotonsilar Hypertrophy with Mean Pulmonary Arterial Pressure
Introduction: Hypertrophied tonsils and adenoids may cause upper airway obstruction and cardio-pulmonary complications due to pulmonary arterial hypertension. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) and selected adenotonsilar hypertrophy indexes. Materials and Methods: Thirty two patients with upper-airway obstruction resulting ...
متن کاملComparison of the prevalence of reversible airways obstruction in rural and urban Zimbabwean children.
The prevalence of reversible airways obstruction has been assessed in children in three areas in Zimbabwe--northern Harare (high socioeconomic class urban children), southern Harare (low socio-economic class urban children), and Wedza Communal Land (rural children from peasant families). Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was measured before and after six minutes' free running in 2055 Zimbabwean primar...
متن کاملRespiratory problems 2 years after acute bronchiolitis in infancy.
We assessed the clinical progress of 55 children 2 years after admission to hospital with acute bronchiolitis and performed lung function tests on 40. During the 2 year follow up period 75% of the children had wheezed, 36% had 2 or more lower respiratory symptoms lasting more than 2 weeks, 33% had more than 100 days of lower respiratory symptoms, and 13% were readmitted to hospital with acute r...
متن کاملSputum induction in children.
Sputum induction has been used to study asthma in children since the first description of the technique in 1992 [1]. Since then, w20 reports (five reviews) have appeared in the literature describing sputum induction in children with airways disease. In general, sputum induction in children of w6 yrs is safe and has a satisfactory success rate. Approximately 500 children have been studied by spu...
متن کاملDead space ventilation in normal children and children with obstructive airways diease.
Anatomical dead space was measured in 72 normal children aged from 5 to 16 years, using the single breath method. There was a linear increase in this measurement with height, weight, and end-inspiratory lung volume. Physiological dead space was measured in 52 normal children using the Bohr equation and substituting a rebreathing PCO2 for alveolar PCO2. There was a parallel increase in this meas...
